12 months

2015- 2016 - otherwise known as the year things got hard.

Grandad died.

Tom lost his fight with cancer.

Cancer took my dad from me.

All within the space of 12 months. When so much is taken from you in such a short space of time, it's incredibly hard. I was very close with Grandad and still miss him terribly.

With Tom and my Dad... Hell... It doesn't matter that you know it's coming, it still tears a hole in your heart.

Being a parent to a young child who couldn't possibly understand grief and the loss of loved ones, I never really fell apart.

I don't know if it's strange, 4/5 years down the line, I found myself reflecting on them and really feeling that sense of loss. More so than ever.

I think I felt like I wasn't allowed to grieve, to fall apart, and didn't really deal with things.

Fast forward to 2019, an equally hard year for very different reasons. Again no option to fall apart, but this time I've dealt with things in a much healthier way. I've talked about what I could, I've focused on positive mental and physical attitude, made plans for the future and rectified environmental issues that had been dragging me down for years.

For the first time in a long time I'm feeling positive about the future.

2020 is going to be a different kind of 12 months. One which sees a healthy and happy me. If so much sadness can happen to you in 12 months, just imagine how much happiness you can make happen in that time.

  1. Grief hits you, you can't predict when, I struggled years after my parents passed when I realised I'd never introduce them to my Daughter - I didn't expect it, I didn't have a choice. My last 18 months have also been tough, friends help, pain eases with time but never forget it can come back. You are an amazing person, lovely writer and 2020 will be a wonderful year. Happines isn't found its created :) x

    1. Thanks for the comment Stephen, so very kind of you. Grief is a funny old thing eh? It affects everybody differently and we will have our own ways of doing and getting through things. Happiness is most definitely created, never wait for it to come to you.

A child of many names

As I sit here waiting on my little one to wake up it occurred to me just how many names he has.  Of course he has his birth name and we do use it,but we also have a lot of pet names for him, which he will respond to, and other ways of referring to him. Take this for example, when he wakes up from his nap, I can almost guarantee that I will say something along the lines of "Hello, gorgeous, did you enjoy your nap?"  When he sees his dad, he will probably call him"mate", as in, "Hello mate!" and start trying to play with him.  The way his dad and I refer to him is very different and is probably more about our language and communication styles. Then we have pet names.  I can't even tell you where they all came from, how they all started, but each and everyone of them makes me smile, especially when he recognises them as him. The first one was probably by my lovely mate who took his initials and called him Ogl.  Sometimes we vary it and he has Ogl Sp...

Grabbing Opportunities

I absolutely love it when your plans are changed in the blink of an eye into something you wouldn't ordinarily do but which turn out to be even better. Today's plan was to drop D off at work, go buy a raincoat for O and head home.  Very simple and not very exciting, but a plan that I actually felt a bit stressed out about.  As I wandered around that large well known chain for baby and children clothes and supplies I heard a voice talking to me (not in my head,  I hasten to add), and without even thinking turned around and said,  "OK". It's one of those vague responses I tend to do when I'm not concentrating or haven't heard properly and I'm too embarrassed to explain I'm deaf and didn't hear.  What had I just committed to?  Apparently the photographer had a cancellation and I'd agreed to fill it.  PANIC!!! I immediately questioned how much it would cost,  and was pleased to hear it was free. Where's the catch I thought,  and asked...

Panic!

I woke up on Monday morning with an honest to God freak out. In three weeks I return to work after nearly 11 months off work. Jeez Louise where has that time gone? I remember before I went on maternity leave I had ideas about what I would do during my time off and how when I returned to work I would be in such a great routine that everything would run seamlessly. Er.. No. Quite the opposite, I have a baby who hates naps, unless he sleeps on you and doesn't particularly like sleeping at night. I somehow manage to fit in (just about) mealtimes, and attending appts and play sessions. Housework? Don't be ridiculous,  my son is incredibly lucky, and I'm incredibly surprised that he has clean clothes to wear every day. There have been occasions where I realised I was dressing him in his last set of clean clothes and the panic washing and drying without a tumble dryer has begun. When I return to work in 2 and a half weeks I'm either going to fall apart or become super ef...
